ARTWORK OF THE WEEK

Inside a Dance by Natascha Vazquez (2017)

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Natascha Vazquez’s studio, which is in the midst of her family’s farm: you walk past wild pigs, goats, countless dogs, past a flurry of vet activity, through to a garage which is her studio and sanctuary. The setting provides the perfect context for her organic and colourful paintings. Vazquez makes painter-paintings, the kind that allow you to delight in the vibrancy of a colour or the curve of a line, but I love how they also reference things and emotions. I find the bigger shapes are often embodied, referring to organs, or even figures that are entangled or making sense of the space around them.
